Lenovo is saying that I need to do an fdisk /mbr on their machine to fix a problem that I have with imaging. One of problems is their Rescue & Recovery is across 4 on a separate partition that are with XP Pro. I cannot boot into XP Pro with a CD because lucky for us, computer manufacturers don't want to give us one. I have tried creating boot disks off the Internet and it gave me a memory blue screen when there is 2GB of memory installed and nothing but XP and SP3 on the machine. Does anyone know of a solution or way around this? Thanks in advance.

If you cannot start your computer, you can run the Recovery Console from the Microsoft Windows XP startup disks (or the Windows XP CD-ROM). This article describes how to perform this task of creating floppies so you can load the Recovery Console via the options at the beginning of XP Setup, you do not have to do the setup of XP after using the Recovery Console. You will only be using the Recovery Console option to repair your current installation.

310994 - Obtaining Windows XP Setup Boot Disks

You will have some access if you can load the XP Recovery Console onto the machine.

HOW TO: Install and Use the Recovery Console for Windows XP (Q307654)

You will have to download files from Microsoft to put onto Floppies to achieve this. You can put them on CD with a bit of extra effort if required. Easier still is if someone has any XP or 2000 CD that you can borrow to just load the Recovery Console. Do not attempt to use such a borrowed CD for any other purpose.

Once you have the Recovery Console loaded you may proceed with this fix for your original error message.

Have a look at the FixMbr, FixBoot, BootCfg and ChkDsk commands. Warning from FixMbr can be safely ignored.

While the manufacturer might not GIVE you a reinstall CD, they should sell you one for a nominal fee. Try that route.

Good luck,
