Hi
I have recently had to reinstall the XP Pro OS after a problem. I have with no problem installed XP Pro and Office but Outlook will not let me enter the information needed to poll my ISP's.. All I get is "The operation failed due to a registery or installation problem. Restart Outlook again, if the problem persists please reinstall"

Well I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling several times only to get the same problem.

I have reluctantly returned to Outlook Express for the time being.
Any ideas anyone..
Thanks

SYMPTOMS
When you try to gain access to the Tools menu so that you can view
e-mail accounts or perform a send and receive operation, you may
receive the following error message:

The operation failed due to a registry or installation problem.
Restart Outlook and try again. If the problem persists, please
reinstall.

CAUSE
This behavior can occur if your e-mail profile is damaged.

RESOLUTION
To resolve this behavior, create a new e-mail profile.

You can search the knowledge base yourself here:

I would therefor suggest to remove all your profiles, to be safe,
reboot. Then add your profiles again.

Hi gpalmer711
I have just looked so far the only profile in there is one called Outlook is this usual ? and you suggest I delete this and reboot and enter a new profile, yes..
Thanks for you help so far

Thats correct.

Ideally this is what you should do.

Uninstall Outlook
Delete Outlook Profile
Reboot
Reinstall Outlook
Reboot
New Profile should have been created automatically. If not create it yourself.

Hi Greg
Looks like the problem is that Outlook will not uninstall totally.
I will try to uninstall all of Office and start again :-(
Thanks again for your help.

hi,

i had a somewhat related problem. i followed your suggestion and added a profile. i swaped outlook.pst file name, then deleted one and ended up having just one. it worked. but each time i started outlook it prompted me to select a profile even though there's only one (and even though i clicked on use this profile as default next time).

however, using the microsoft doc you listed, i resolved this via the Start|Control Panel|Mail|Show Profiles| and i clicked use this as default. worked!

THANKS!
