Hello, I just got a fresh out of the box computer identical to the one i set up yesterday without incident. I joined it to the domain and attempted to do windows updates. They did not work. I disabled the windows firewall which also did not work. I could ping up to the gateway but then it would not ping externally. All the other computers on my network do not have any problems! I ran the WinXPSock fix which also didn't do anything. I tried manually putting in the proper dns, wins and gateway ip's which also wasn't successful. Fed up with it not working thinking i had misconfigured something, I reformatted the machine. Still cannot connect to the internet though. Does anyone have any ideas... i'm stumped!

Is this using the same LAN connections as the other machine? Because if you cannot even ping the gateway it sounds like a cable problem to me.

That's assuming you manually configured its IP address and subnet mask properly.

So, check IP address and subnet mask are correct. It must be in the same network. If you still can't ping the gateway, check if you can ping 127.0.0.1

If you can't ping 127.0.0.1 then its a bad NIC. Otherwise cable is suspect #1.

if the machine has been joined to the domain and you can ping the gateway then i suspect that the cable is ok

is there a proxy server that needs specifying in the lan settings in IE ?

I was going to say that about the Proxy server also.

Go to internet explorer - Tools > Internet Options > Connections

Click LAN Settings...

If you need a proxy...configure it.

If you don't, and there are entries there, remove them....

Incorrect/invalid proxy information is a pretty common reason why you can't get on the internet when you CAN get on a lan and other PCs can get on the net with no problems.

Used to happen all the time where I work until I eventually traced the culprit setting and turned it off.

Silly thing, but you haven't got a "selected mac addresses only" setup in your gateway have you? and then forgot to add the mac for this comp?

Try comparing the results of ipconfig/all between this PC and one that works.

Consider posting the results here?

Gateway is a firewall and ping is off. The gateway does not have mac filtering because i know that and the previous new comp i added the day before did not have a problem with it. so that's not the problem. I don't have a proxy server but always make sure "Automatically detect settings" is checked and it is. If it were the cable i don't understand why i would be able to vnc to it successfully which i can. Any ideas?

Is there is a max number of internet connections allowed by your firewall/gateway or even ISP? Just kind of brain-storming here.

try updating the NIC drivers, making sure you DHCP table has enough IP's for each computer and device (security cam, printer, pc, desktop, laptop, wireless devices, ect..) if youhave more than the table allows you ened to increase it buy following the instructions in your gateway manual...or dith the gateway and use the domain server to handle your internet, firewall, and DHCP.....I find it easier to manage all of the above from the server.
