XP Pro - eliminating .exe's

After Installing XP Pro I couldn't avoid the fact that it is running so many .exe's that it is stopping up the system, even new browser windws are hard to open.

I do not currently collaborate with with other developers as far as using it for similiar purposes.

What and how can I shut down dome of the non-essential routines that are constantly running?

The first place to visit is the Add or Remove section in the Control Panel.

Then you can look at what is left via MSconfig.
