xp pro client cannot run applications on server

I have a new server that I bought from Dell with SBS2003 preinstalled. I installed some applications on it. I added a couple of users and computers. One is an XP machine. It seems to connect fine to the new server. I can look at all the shared folders. I cannot run the applications. I get access denied errors. One of these applications requires SQL - I eventually get that SQL server does not exist or access is denied to the user.

I have never installed a server so if i have left out any information please allow me the chance to supply it.

Note: The other computer is Win98 - and there are a host of problems with it that I will address in a different thread.
