Ok..my parents had a power outage and their computer was turned on and now won't boot.

I am getting to the initial point of the Windows XP load screen and then right away it is going to the BSOD.

I have tried to run a system diagnostics and it all passes.

Tried to boot from the windows XP cd and get into the recovery mode...but as soon as it tried to load xp it fails back to the BSOD.....

Any ideas here?.. I even put a new hard drive in and am getting the same results.

Could this be a memory issue??

Tell us what error the BSOD is reporting.

Have you tried booting into safe mode?

Try booting from a Diagnostic CD/DVD such as Ultimate Boot CD, and running some tests, including memory tests.

Ok... I was able to get the hard drive hooked up to another computer and was able to run CHKDSK on it. Hooked it back up and the computer will now boot....however... now the keyboard/mouse will not work.

I tried booting into safemode and they still don't work there.... any suggestions?

This is reading like there were corrupt Windows files that were 'fixed' by chkdsk (all converted to *.chk files). You now need to run SFC on it to replace any missing files. How do you do that with no keyboard and mouse loaded!?

Have you tried connecting a USB mouse or keyboard when Windows is running?

You have all your data backed up away from the drive?

My guess is that the motherboard is damaged from the power problem, maybe other parts also sustained damage; without thorough testing, there's really no way to be sure of what's still good and what isn't.

Just a thought...

If the power outage caused file issues, I would think running the System restore to a restore point a few days back, this might correct any drivers that were corrupted?

Have you tried the Mouse and Keyboard in different connection slots? Are you able to access the Bios and reset that to safe defaults? What type of Mouse and Keyboard are you using? Any other machine that can Remote into the broken system and have a look at the Device Manager etc?

If they don't work you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

First thing is to determine if you have a hardware or software issue. Disconnect the hard drive, and boot from the install media, does the keyboard and mouse work? Does the computer allow you into setup, and the keyboard work? If no you have a hardware issue.

Check the system board for blown caps, check here , also check power supply if you can by swapping it out.

If yes, it's likely software, and you can attempt to do a repair install of windows again, but I suspect it's hardware.
