I am using a 3ghz computer as a file server for 3 computers at my home office. Will there be major improvements in file opening speeds if I install a linux based operating system on the computer? Thanks for the help.

Why not try it and see? (just back up the XP installation or set up a dual boot).

I doubt you'll see much difference - but as far as I can see, the only way you'll find out is by doing it.

I wouldn't expect to see any speed difference. Unless there are a bunch of other services using the computer's resources, the actual transmission through the network will probably be the slowest link.
