We are rolling out 90 new Dell workstations. These workstations come as per standard with XP-Pro and activated. I had to make more than 3 sysprep images due to multiple images in our office with our company applications installed. I don’t want to register each one now separately and don’t want to register with a unattended file seeing that users don’t have internet access. Would there be any implications using only one that I have registered, on all workstations.

As far as I am aware you need a non-activating XP licence to clone multiple machines. I see on another posting that running sysprep causes the installation product key to be re-prompted where you can put in the correct one per machine, but this is not the advice I got from Microsoft. I am awaiting a resource kit for the sysprep utility so can't test this yet but I was told I needed to purchase a volume licence which doesn't require activation. You can use this to image existing PC's that you already have licences for as well. I had to buy a 5 user licence which means I buy 5 new machines with no licence at all and use this on them and can also re-image machines that I already hold a licence for.
