Hello all. We seem to be having a problem with the Print Spooler Service on our Xp machines. What is happening is the Print Spooler Service will not stay started, it keeps stopping. We are unable to add printers and print because of this. Has anyone know what may be causing this or how to troubleshoot it??? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks much.

I get error ID 7034 (spooler service terminated unexpectadly). All the settings in Services for the print spooler look good. I am at a loss.

Try using a different printer driver or another printer as your default printer to see if it isn't an issue with your current driver.

Or, clear out any suspect spool files from the print spooler directory:

Default: C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\PRINTERS

Although, as you say it's affecting more than one machine perhaps the drivers are the issue.

Are you seeing that error in the eventlog at the same time across all machines?

More importantly are you seeing this happen when then security policy applies?

Enable the spooler service, run gpupdate /force from a DC, look for an event in the Application log called 1704 from Source "SceCli" on the XP machine and check whether the print spooler service has stopped.

If it has the group policy is killing the spooler service.

If it's not - then it's something else :-\

I had this problem. Not only was not allowing me to print but it was blocking a totally unrelated program not to open correctly. The solution to my problem was to disconnect to a shared printer off of another computer. This pc had been connected to that printer for months but something happened and caused this error. Once I disconnected to that shared printer the error went away and the program started opening.Sounds weird but it worked.
