I am experiencing a problem with only WinXP workstations being able to dynamically register with DNS.

we are running BIND DNS and DHCP from a FreeBSD machine.

Our desktop environment is a mix of WinXP and older Win2K machines. The Wink2K machines are able to register correctly.

The only error in the event log of the workstation reads like this:

The Security System could not establish a secured connection with the server DNS/sever.domain.gov. No authentication protocol was available.

I have seen much conflicting info on what this means, none of which addresses my XP-only problem.

any help would be much appreciated!

What Windows firewall is that enabled? I have found issues in the past with this. Also did you try to statically assign the DNS to the pc's?

Statically assign the DNS? can you explain what you mean by that?

I ran the IPCONFIG /registerdns command from an WinXP client, which should force it to regregister with DNS, but no success.

We have turned off windows firewall via group policy.

He means did you try manually assigning the dns server in the properties of tcp/ip under that particular network connection.

yes, I tried using DHCP for ip address/gateway and statically assigning the DNS server...no luck
