I have two computers, both running xp pro. ADSL connection to internet, through 5 port 10/100 hub into DSL302g ADSL modem.
Problem is two fold but I think related.
Both computers are able to see each other in my computer, share files and printers, BUT one can not access the internet and neither computer can ping each other.
My computer can access the internet. It has a standard setup and can ping myADSl modem as well as connect.I am unable to ping the other computer, it can not ping either the modem or my PC and has not internet conectivity. the setting appear to be identical (Obviously not). This also means that we can not play any TCP based network games also. My son is driving me nuts over this. Any suggestions?

Are both machines set in TCP/IP Properties to "obtain an IP address automaticly"?

If so, do an Start, Run, CMD
ipconfig /all

on both machines and post the results back here.

Start to make sure the default gateway is set to the router/modem.
Also, there could be a firewall in place? blocking pings.

I f have Norton Internet Security on both machines But have completely disable them.

ok, so your router/modem is 10.1.1.1

Give both PCs a fix IP, 10.1.1.2 and 10.1.1.3
Make the
subnet 255.255.255.0
default gateway 10.1.1.1
Alternate 10.1.1.2 on the 10.1.1.3
and 10.1.1.3 on the 10.1.1.2
dsn also 10.1.1.1

try

. On both machines, Control Panel, Internet Options, Connections, Local Area Network (LAN) settings, clear all checkmarks in any boxes, and hit OK.

. Check that the native XP firewall is not enabled on either machine:
. Check for a "hidden" firewall component in your Antivirus software: PC-Illan, for example, will install one by default.

. On the machine "that does not work", run the utility discussed in faq779-4625

. Reboot and test again.

One "hidden" XP network gem is the diagnotic tool. Start, Run, netsh diag gui

Make sure you set options for DNS, Gateway, and IP Address before starting the scan.

Sorry to say it both neither method worked.
The modem has IPs of 10.1.1.1, 10.1.1.2
I have the netsh file output and have run the fix, but although I can transfer files through Explorer, which uses WINS I do not have pure TCP access to the two computers and the second computer can not link to the ADSL modem. ie. the internet.
Sorry and thanks anyway.
Will probably have toformat the drive and re-build.

Your modem has 2 IP's ? How do you explain that?

it has 3 10.1.1.1 for usb config.
10.1.1.2 for UTP config and 10.1.1.3 for Advanced diagnostics... or something. Thats what the manual says, unless I have mis-read something.

Barry, lets repair the Winsock service stacks.

. download and apply the utility discussed in faq779-4625
. Test. If still no joy, apply the instructions in this MS KB article, reboot, and test again:
How to Recover from Winsock2 corruption

To resolve this issue, delete the corrupted registry keys, and then reinstall of the TCP/IP protocol.

Step 1: Delete the corrupted registry keys
Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
In Registry Editor, locate the following keys, right-click each key, and then click Delete:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock2

When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
Note Restart the computer after you delete the Winsock keys. Doing so causes the Windows XP operating system to create new shell entries for those two keys. If you do not restart the computer after you delete the Winsock keys, the next step does not work correctly.

Step 2: Install TCP/IP
Right-click the network connection, and then click Properties.
Click Install.
Click Protocol, and then click Add.
Click Have Disk.
Type C:\Windows\inf, and then click OK.
On the list of available protocols, click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click OK.
Restart the computer.

Don't we need a router somewhere in this setup? It seems the 10.1 ip address from the modem can only be used by one computer, but a router would re-assign ip addresses in the 192.168.0.x range.

bygeek, the mode IS a router, and it is not a MUST to have 192.168 addresses on a LAN

Here is what jumps out at me from the above IPConfig dumps ... why are there IP addresses in the DNS Suffix search list??

This is not where the DNS server addresses go ... it should be the name of your domain (e.g. mydomain.com). That way, if you ping "machine1", the request to the DNS server is actually for "machine1.mydomain.com" <- a fully qualified name.

I do not believe that IP addresses belong here.

Thanks for all your help guys but it still doesn't work. Think I will have to format and rebuild the system. I think there must be something corrupted in the installation as it work before this rebuild but doesn't work now. It seems that it is determined to "not" work.
