Wasnt sure where to post this, so I thought I would start here...
It appears Windows XP has a maximum length of 1020 at which it will display a text file. For example, if you have a 2000 byte file, 1020 bytes will be displayed on row 1, and the remaining 980 will wrap over to row 2. I remember dealing with this problem with Windows 95, but thought I had heard this would be increased when Windows 2000 or XP came out (cant remember). Guess I was wrong.

Can anyone confirm this is the max limit at which Windows can display, as well as any possible tricks for getting around this. I'm trying to work with a 1600 to 2000 byte fixed length file using a text editor (SPF) as well as Notepad, but it doesnt work too well as it wraps over at position 1020. I'm trying to avoid using the mainframe...

Any insight would be welcome. Thanks.

Try Textpad ( It doesn't wrap unless you ask it to, however long the record is.

Your assumptions on notepad seem to be correct - I don't know SPF.

Thanks. I'll take a look at that and see if it helps.
