I have several Windows XP machines on a domain, they all have service pack 2 installed with the exception of one test box.

At some point after the installation of service pack 2 i noticed some problems with the machines. The following problems are ones that all win xp sp2 machines on my network are experiencing:

- Outlook reminders dont work anymore (i.e. they dont pop up to remind of upcoming appointments)
- The windows search function doesnt work at all. (unless i go into the C: drive of the machine and launch it from the shortcut on the left).
- Most annoyingly Administrators cannot install programs.

The last point about being unable to install programs i figured out a workaround for. When i try to install a program as Admin i get a windows installer failed error (i have followed a few tutorials on how to fix this but to no avail). So to get around this, I have to join a WORKGROUP instead of the domain, reboot, login, rejoin the DOMAIN, reboot, login again as admin and I can install programs fine (for a limited period of time).

As you can imagine all that is quite annoying. All the above problems are not evident on the test box which only has service pack 1 installed, which leads me to believe it is a problem with service pack 2.

Any ideas on what is causing this problem and how i can get around this?

The network has a server on it which is running Small Business Server 2000 on which does shared files, exchange and other tasks. Could it be a permissions issue? Them not being assigned to administrators correctly? But wouldnt this affect the service pack 1 box too? Why is it resolved after disconnecting and rejoining the domain?

As you can see I have many thoughts on it, but no idea what is the actual cause and how to fix it. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

I've never come across an issue like this before, so I have little advice for a real fix-although I think it is settings on the server versus the workstations. My thought about installing software is that at logon choose to login to just the computer as Admin, don't login to the domain. Then you should be able to install to your hearts content.
Good Luck!
