I had a user that may or may not have had the Sasser virus, and the workstation kept rebooting, and would not get past the initial boot strap.

I installed a second drive and made it the master, installed Windows XP, and booted up. I then ran a full file scan and virus scan on the problem drive.

Had a couple of what seemed to be soft sector errors and replaced a couple of corrupt files.

Removed the drive, and defective drive booted. Then applied the required updates, etc.

Oh joy.
but since this was the bosses's computer, he was very happy.

I've had a corrupt registry do the same thing when applying a security policy from the server. Couldn't do anything but reformat at that point.

and they wonder why they call it Great Pains!
