XP keeps losing correct time - (i've tried internet time etc)

Hello,

My brothers Advent 7016 laptop keeps displaying an incorrect time (the standard clock located in the system tray, bottom right-hand side)

It seems to lose the time if the laptop has been on for 2 or more hours or after a shutdown.

I've tried the "Automatically synchronize with an Internet time server" setting but that still results in windows displaying an incorrect time.


Any suggestions would be helpful!

Check the BIOS and clock battery, these are the small ones inside the laptop, but be careful opening it, a laptop is a delicate piece of equipment.

If it is losing time while running, as a guess he has a cute screensaver that is resource intensive.

It is is wrong when you turn the machine on, marcs41 suggestion above applies.

If it is wrong when you force an update over the internet, your Time Zone setting is suspect.

Thanks for the replies, its wrong when the system has been running for 2 or more hours (constant use doesnt matter if the screen saver is active or not)

And when the machine has been turned on. How do you mean check the battery by opening it up, how will I tell if thats the fault by looking at it?

How far behind are we talking after it's been running for 2 hours?

Sounds like a resource issue to me as well. You may have too many apps running in the background at startup, and this includes all those little icons in the lower-right corner next to your clock.

Have you used msconfig before? It will show you what's loading with Windows:

1) Start -> Run
2) Type msconfig and hit enter
3) On the startup tab should be a complete list

At this point, we're only looking for a head count. I wouldn't uncheck anything just yet.
