I currently have a file server which i require some application icons for.
The problem is all the main icons for windows I cannot find as .ico files but are embedded into the .exe or dll files.
To change an icon (not being a Shortcut icon) see Folder Options/ File Types/**extension**/ Advanced/ Change Icon. For Shortcut icons, see the Properties of the Shortcut
I had this filed away, it mentions folders, but you might like to see if it works for files too?
Here's something you can try in XP. Take any full size image file that you want for an icon or shortcut. Convert it to BMP if it isn't already, with your photo editor program.
In Folder Options/ View, select the option to display file extensions so you can see the .bmp extension. Rename the file to an .ico extension. (Only works with .bmp extensions).
Don't worry about any resizing etc. This will happen automatically when you use this image on your Desktop as a shortcut or icon for a folder.
To make your image a shortcut select any shortcut anywhere and on the Properties of the shortcut select "Change Icon" and browse to the new .ico file you created, press Apply and OK where required.
You do the same for any folder, where you have the Customize tab on the Properties to get to the Change Icon option (ignore any comment about turning on folder options), just browse to your .ico and press OK and Apply where required.
Thanks for the update thats a cool little tip...
In the end i found a cool little bunch of icons on the internet... and then wrote a small for loop in unix to base64 decode the images ....
I still need a couple though ... .bat, .flp but I can prob create these myself as theres not a lot that I still need..
