xp home won't recognize usb ports

my grandfathers usb ports won't work. hes got xp home service pack 2, amd athlon xp 2000+, 1.67 ghz, 512 mb ram. I tried updating drivers, uninstalling in device manager and reinstalling, restarting. nothing seems to work. thanks for any info.

In what way do you know that they don't work? In System Properties > hardware > device manager, go to the bottom of the list and see if there is a section on USB - and what does it show?
