This is an Analogy so don't take it personally as some have.

Why change the engine if all you need is to change the spark plugs.

acewarlock,

Download and run your manufacturers hard disk drive diagnostics. I would say that 70% of the time we run into this issue it is drive related (read error, bad sector, etc.).

Post back if you need more help with this.

Good Luck.

John

boot from your recovery disc and do a repair install

It passed the HD Diag and I don't have a recovery disk.

acewarlock,

According to one post... This is usually due to an error in the boot.ini file. The entry for XP is either missing or incorrect. Edit the boot.ini file and check the entry for NT is correct, for example for an IDE disk the entry should look something like

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\winnt="Windows XP Home"

Check that disk and partition are correct (try running checkdsk off of a boot or utility CD). If you have recently added a new disk or altered the partitions try changing the disk() and partition() values. If you are sure everything is OK, then the actual file may be corrupt so copy NTOSKRNL.EXE off of the installation CD onto the %systemroot%/system32 directory.

Also check into this link for more repair options:

Good Luck.

Thanks for all your help, but the HD is now unreadable, so I reformated and reinstalled XP Pro.

you could have just ran chkdsk /r from the recovery console

but it's a bit late for that.

'When all else fails.......read the manual'

Ifound my Restore Disk and did a Restore to the HD, it ran 2 days and the samething happened again this time the ERROR about the S.M.A.R.T drive came up and said the drive was bad, so I replaced the drive and it is working fine.

Thanks to all
