XP home Profile Issuse

I have a Laptop with XP home on it, when I try to make any changes to the desktop they arn't saved eg I try to Add My Computer, My Documents etc to the dektop and they dissapear, also if I try to login as Administrator locally I get the unable to log you on because of an Account issue, I checked microsoft and I cant login under safe mode either

Any ideas ??

Do two online AV scans. Trend Micro and Panda are good choices:

This is a case where you want to find a repairable virus, as your next choice is a repair reinstallation and I know many laptops only offer a "Restore" CD instead of a full XP Home CD.
