Hi All

My pc is running very slow and after doing some searching on the web - the recommendation was to remove unwanted programs which I have done.

I have gone from 61 to 52 processes and CPU usage from 70% to under 52%.

Is there any way I can identify processes that should not be running eg; virus etc. I have listed all the processes that I currently have running. I have multiple incidences of SVCHOST.exe and my understanding is that Windows creates more to manage system resources - so I can not remove them.
Many thanks in advacne for any help.

Cheers Tee.

I would turn these off (see below) for starters. I would also use Autoruns to do this since it's a much easier way to check/uncheck to enable/disable things from running.

Take a look at the interface vs. what you're looking at with JackThis.

Also, I would get rid of Norton because it's a real pig in terms of resources and slowing down your computer. If you want to pay for something, go with Windows Live OneCare (three PCs for $40 or less). I know it's a MS product, but it protects your from viruses/spyware and it DOESN'T bog your system down nearly to the extent of the large bloated Mcafee/Norton products. If you want to go free, then there are several to choose from.

I have never liked security suite products like Norton, McAfee, TrendMicro etc., as they tend to be resource hogs, but a lot of people have commented that Norton 2009 is a much improved and slimmer package. They all cost money though on a yearly renewal basis.

Free products that do a adequate job include, AVG8 free, Avast, and Avira Antivirus, when combined with the Windows Firewall.

Along with goombawaho's suggestion, fix these:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)

O9 - Extra button: (no name) - SolidConverterPDF - (no file) (HKCU)

Does not need to be running at startup:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iTunesHelper] "C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe

O4 - Global Startup: QuickBooks Update Agent.lnk = C:\Program Files\Common Files\Intuit\QuickBooks\QBUpdate\qbupdate.exe

The following should be checked if they are needed or not:

Japanese/Chinese input method editor...

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IMJPMIG8.1] "C:\WINDOWS\IME\imjp8_1\IMJPMIG.EXE" /Spoil /RemAdvDef /Migration32

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PHIME2002A] C:\WINDOWS\system32\IME\TINTLGNT\TINTSETP.EXE /IMEName

If you start Acronis Imager manually, then the following can be removed, if you are using it scheduled (Task Planer) then leave them be:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TrueImageMonitor.exe] C:\Program Files\Acronis\TrueImageHome\TrueImageMonitor.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AcronisTimounterMonitor] C:\Program Files\Acronis\TrueImageHome\TimounterMonitor.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Acronis Scheduler2 Service] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Acronis\Schedule2\schedhlp.exe"

Do you or someone else access the computer Remotely? if not then remove the following:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [LogMeIn GUI] "C:\Program Files\LogMeIn\x86\LogMeInSystray.exe"

This one should be removed, if you do not have MOODLE installed anymore, if it is still installed then leave it alone:

O23 - Service: XAMPP Service (XAMPP) - Unknown owner - C:\moodle11\moodle\service.exe (file missing)

According to the HJT LOG, you are not infected by any malware that can be detected...
Just in case, take a look at Malware Bytes AntiMalware aka. MBAM and run a scan...

Also helpful would be to know the specs on your IBM/Lenovo Laptop, e.g. memory installed, free disk space, all that would help, etc...

Download CCleaner and have it remove all unnecessary files (e.g. TMP files), as these can slow down a PC...

Hi All

Many thanks for all your assistance. I really appreciate it.:-D :-D

Have completed all your suggestions. Now I have 37 processes running and CPU is around 30% - goes up and down a bit.

Stats for my system are:

Acer Desktop
OS - XP Home 2002 - SP3

CPU - Celeron 2.81GHz
RAM - 480MB
HD - 72GB (27GB Free)

This is a partitioned drive - 72GB on D driver as well.

RAM - 480MB
if you ever get a chance to upgrade, then do so, 512mb (shared video takes about 32mb) is really low for a PC running XP SP3... get another 512mb RAM stick to up the memory to at least 1024mb...

that is the main reason why it is SO slow...

Took you advise and now have 1.48GB of RAM - my pc is just cruzing along....Yippee.

Many thanks Tee.
