I haven't installed any new programs and all of a sudden after booting up today I cannot get into internet explorer and system restore. They both display the same error message and shut down. "internet explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close." Then it asks if you want to tell Microsoft about the problem and send a error report. This is frustrating. Any suggestions? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

It sounds like some damage was done before your last shutdown. Have you looke to see if system restore is enabled/running? start/run/services.msc

Can you view the error report and see if it tells you what file is at fault? Had a client that had this same problem and it was crashing in a file called me1.dll which was part of a program called MediaLoads

To get further information about the error look in your Event viewer.

Look in the System or Application folder. You can get to the Event Viewer via right click My Computer icon and select Manage.

Any errors logged in the Event Viewer can be expanded by double clicking on the error line.

Some general things to try.

Try Safe Mode (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?).

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows itself by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.
