Im running a desktop computer at home with XP Home Edition, connected to an external cable modem. My virus def.'s are updated to most recent - 11AUG03 (Norton Liveupdate)

While running the W32.Blaster.Worm Fix Tool downloaded from Symantec's web site, I get the following Microsoft error message: "Fixtool for W32.Blaster.Worm has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience". It goes on to give me the option of sending an error report to Microsoft. I ran the fix tool after downloading the patch and with Windows XP system restore turned off. I also tried doing this in Safe Mode. Any idea why I am getting this message? Also, how can I tell if the patch if properly installed?

Sorry if this duplicates but I didnt see this exact issue in existing threads / forums. ( I did post here and in the Norton forum )

Scratch that - it's all smoke and mirrors.

This is a Home vs. Pro issue.

The facility it uses to turn off the RPC service is not available in the Home edition.

If you search for and do not find msblast.exe, and you have applied the patch from MS, you are fine. A firewall would be nice. Even the native XP ICF firewall is sufficient.
