I posted this question last week. in reply to advice, I have maintained the PC well since new. The drive is not defragmented and there is loads of spare HD space. I have downloaded and run BootVis from MS which says that windows is booting in around 25 seconds. However it is still taking around 50-60 seconds. Could this suggest a bios/pre boot up/hardware problem?

The PC is an XP 1600 with 512DDR RAM.

Any ideas?

Does this suggest simply reinstalling windows may not help?

Check your network settings. Make sure you have no duplicate drivers in device manager.
These are common causes of slow boot up. Notice that having static IPs allow the machine to boot faster than DHCP. ~Apex1x
Miller's Law:
You can't tell how deep a puddle is until you step into it.

Also, if you have an unused network adapter in the machine, assign it a bogus IP address like 10.10.10.10. This will prevent DHCP from searching for a server and holding up the boot sequence until it times out.

Hope that helps.
