xp hangs / sometimes automatically reboots

XP very unstable - seems to hang increasingly frequently ... often in IE (Version 8.0.6001.18702) and sometimes appears to automatically reboot (possibly when both Eudora Version 7.1.0.9 & IE are open at the same time??) Difficult to say. Restore points don't resolve ... Any help with diagnosing / tracking / fixing problem most welcome. Many thanks!

Start by changing the recovery options so it doesn't automatically restart, but instead shows you a blue screen with a relevant error.

Right Click on My Computer ->Properties ->Advanced -> Startup and Recovery (click on the Settings button).

There go down to "System Failure" and un-check the Automatically restart checkbox.

O.k your way out and wait until it happens again. Then right down the error you get and Google it for possible solutions or post back here.

What's the history? Presumably machine ran properly until recently?

Did you make any changes to hardware/software that coincide with the start of the problem?

It could be the start of a hardware problem (eg, cpu overheating - but only occasionally spiking hot enough to cause freezing or rebooting - most machines have a temperature monitor available in the bios settings or from suitable software (eg Everest)).

Malware?

A repair reinstall may help if its not hardware - preferably with an install disk including SP3 (if you have an install disk)

Thank you for your kind help.
Following ChkDsk, I decided to go to Msconfig and disable all but my security software at startup.
Fingers crossed this appears to have done the trick!
