Hi,

I am running XP Pro and im trying to set access permissions on a folder on an NTFS partition.

However when I go to local sharing and security, the 'Make this folder private' tick box is greyed out?

Does anyone know why this this and how i can enable it so that i can secure this folder?

Any help is as always greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Chris

It is probably that the user you are logged in as is not the administrator or equal to.

JON

Just change the security permissions on it so only your user has access (ie, remove any other users/groups which have access to it).

Hi

Thanks for the responses. The login I am using is in the administrators group.

I don't seem to have the same security dialog that I had under 2000. Apart from making the directory shared the only option I seem to have is to make the directory private. Under 2000 I had a dialog that listed the users and their permissions as you say. I dont seem to have the same dialog available under xp.

Is there anything else that it may be?

Cheers,

Chris

When you right click on the folder and choose properties, is there not a tab for security? Should be. Try it.

JON

Nope, I only have General, Sharing and Customise.. and I have double checked and the partition is definitly NTFS..

You've got simplified sharing enabled. Try safe mode to change the security (think that's right) - or disable simplified sharing (Folder Options, view tab).

Definately turn that off, I have heard that is a security issue.

JON

Thats that ticket.. switching that off re-enabled the security tab .. which is what i've been looking for since I moved to xp from 2000.. it seems that 2000 defaults this to off where as xp defaults it to on.. Microsoft trying to 'protect' the user from that nasty technical stuff :))

Thanks for all your help chaps..

Chris

Exactly how do I "disable simplified sharing". I have been to the Folder Options View tab and I do not see a option to turn this feature on or off.
