XP dumps Handspring USB driver periodically

My highly tuned W98SE box blew a mother board, and in a rush I got a XP box from a local vendor about 6 months ago.
I'm mostly happy with it, as far as one can be with a new computer.

In the past couple months, the Handspring USB driver has been ditched a couple times. To me, it seems like it happens after a Windows update, or otherwise being scrubbed by anti-virus and or anti-spyware software.

I did the HandspringUSBregClean.exe thing. I've reloaded the driver from "C:\Program Files\Handspring\Drivers" going thru Control Panel / System / Hardware / Device Manager. I did the soft reset mentioned in another post/FAQ. Right now, I press the hotsync button, and get a tripple-bell from XP. No blinking light on the particular USB port on the powered hub, though the other USB devices (CF reader, Iomega USB 100) have retained their working/blinking status. This indicates despite being "fine" as far as XP is concerned, there's definitely some point that XP isn't 'seeing' all of the cradle.

Do I reinstall over 4.0.1? Backup first? Does anyone have the exact runflow for fixing this at the point I'm at.
Yes, I was a dummy for not writing down how I fixed it before, but if someone helps me out I'll be sure to post it someplace of use. (Like the FAQ here for instance.)

Last question, does anyone else have this sort of periodic problem where XP dumps the USB functionality for a specific device such as the USB cradle?

Thanks in advance for any replies and for reading such a long post.

You should try downloading the lastest version of Desktop software from the PalmOne site (it will be compatible with your HandSpring (at least in my experience it is), and might help.

The latest version is 4.1.

Good luck!

Thank you! I had thought I had the latest version, but I was incorrect.

I reinstalled over the old 4.0.1 with the new 4.0.1 and it worked.

For anyone else with the same problem, if you installed or reinstalled on XP using the program "PalmDesktop_401Hb.exe" at a file size around 11,517 KB, you'll probably need to download the most recent version of the desktop (6/2003 I think) and try reinstalling again.

The version I used I downloaded today 1/11/04 and was named "PalmDesktop_401_ENG.exe" and had a filesize of around 12,117 KB. I had used the HandspringUSBRegCLean.exe program previously, but do not know if it would be required.

NOTE: It remains to be seen if this resolves the periodic nature of the issue, but at least it's a solution for when the ability to hotsync has been lost on XP.

Thanks again.
