I have a users that use a dos application, its hard coded to print to lpt1: Most of the users run bills to a network line printer. Some of them print reports to a local laser printer and run bills to the network printer. For the ones that just print to the network I used devcon to disable there local printer port(which you can do with device manager) so redirecting there printer port to the network works. Now the task is to come up with a way to use both the network and local printer with out giving them admin rights to my domain. To use devcon you have to be a admin, so I cant simple add devcon disable *pnp0401 or devcon enable *pnp0401 to a batch file to disable and enable there local printer port. Has anyone else had this problem, if so how did you resolve it? A Little more about my environment W2k3 Servers, Win XP Pro workstations, Ibm line printers(networked) hp lj 4000 local printers. I'm thinking the only solution for me is to network the local laser printers and just disabling the lpt1 ports..

Thanks

I should be clearer about this, as it is a fussy issue. You certainly can set the privilige under Start, Run, secpol.ms or gpedit.msc for Local Security policies.

For larger settings were you need to "push" the change, the permission you need to grant:

SeLoadDriverPrivilege

Can be done using NTRIGHTS.EXE as discussed in my second link above.

For example:

ntrights +r SeLoadDriverPrivilege -u "Users"
