i recently brought a C-media 8738 pci sound card after disabling the onboard sound in the bios and installing the new driver windows seems to black screen after restarting xp i have had to keep going back to last known good config to get it working again im desprate to get the sound card working is there any advice u can give me it would be apreaciated

Restart in safe mode and remove the new driver. restart and be sure Windows boots normally. If not, you may have disabled the wrong thing in the BIOS. You would want to load the default settings in that case.
Once you have the PC booting normally and the old sound card disabled, search the internet for a driver for your sound card and be sure it's XP compatible. Go step by step, only changing one thing at a time. This type of troubleshooting technique will help you to isolate the source of the problem. Hope this helps.

What he said and,

Did you do it in this order?

boot to bios>disable onboard sound
reboot to Windows & confirm old card is gone under system>hardware>device manager

Shutdown and unplug power.
Install card.
Power Up.
Windows Detection Popup>insert the card's driver disk, have windows search the disk for the driver it needs.

Reboot.

Open Windows Update and see if there is an update for the driver just installed.
