XP DNS NIC driver update? 1

Hello,

I recently moved into an apartment with a cable modem. I have a HP desktop that I purchased in 2001. I have always used it with a dialup connection, but am now having problems connecting via LAN.

I have tried out many options and now believe that my NIC is not compatible with my operating system, Windows XP. I am able to ping number addresses (ex. 216.109.117.204) but not name addresses (ex.

http://www.yahoo.akadns.net)

which I have been told that my machine is not configured with a DNS server address nor is the network card XP compatible.

My NIC is:
Name: Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC
Driver Provider: Microsoft
Driver Date: 7/1/2001
Driver Version: 5.396.530.2001

Is there any updates for this driver to help me out or should I get a new card. Please give me advice for my best options?

It works fine for me. Just click the FAQ tab at the top of the forum, and look for "Lost Connectivity after Registry or Malware Cleanup"

Do you think I should run that xp fix program b/f I install the driver update?

Let me back up...does this problem sound familiar...ever encountered this?

Two things sound familiar:

. There was a long time ago a problem were some realtek-based chips were coded with the wrong hardware ID, and the wrong driver was installed by XP;

. Corruption of the Winsock service stack is common. I would run the "fix" first and test.

In any case, I would load the newer Realtek drivers.
