I reformatted my hard drive, installed Win XP successfully, It worked for a while. Then I downloaded and installed MS "crucial" security updates. On restart, it refused to boot, and would crash during boot and start booting over again. I tried to do a repair install of Win XP and now it crashes 2/3 of the way thru setup. I am stuck because I cannot access the recovery console or cmd line prompt. What can I do?

As you are two thirds of the way into an unsuccessful setup, I think your main option now is to reformat and another attempt at a clean install.

When you come to your updates if the same thing occurs the first option to try would be Safe Mode and "Last Known Good Configuration" option.

Try it again and if you have problems post back with exact error messages.
