Hi all,

OK, I've got a REALLY weird problem with RAS. (get ready for a long story!)

I had RAS set up and working fine for a user dialling in over a standard modem on a Win98 client. He could browse the file system, network, etc no problem. Then we bought him a shiny new 'puter. With XP Pro. And will it connect to the server? Will it heck. ("heck" is NOT really the word I was thinking of...). OK, So we download the Service Packs, the IE updates, the patches, the patches for the patches, etc. We've now got bang-up-to-date systems....

...that still won't connect. arrrgh!

The RAS monitor shows the connection as good and authenticating, and the logs say the the Remote User disconnected. The remote machine (usually) drops the line with Error 619 (once in a blue moon we get a 720 just to stop things getting too boring).

Right, so I install the RRAS update from MS. STILL no joy.
I've tried everything except installing netBEUI into the DUN connectiod (because you can't in XP..grrrr..)

The modems sing their handshake and a sniffer reveals some
..SEND..
..RECV..
packets, but I still get dropped.

To make matters worse, I seem to have a problem with the RRAS Monitor. Just after the modems stop "singing" and the line Conmdition changes from "Listening" to "Authenticating", refreshing the Modem Status pops up the error "An Error occured initializing the dialog. The interface is not connected".

If I have to do one more search though Google / TechNet I think I'll end it all.

(By throwing the server though the window!!!)

Anyway, any tips or pointers would be greatly appreciated.

TIA !

What Dial up settings are you using for Authentication etc protocols?
Whats is the RRAS type?

Authentication Type is "Allow any connection including clear text"

Authentication Provider: Windows XP

Users are configured for Dial-In without CallBack.

As far as the version goes, it's the bog-standard Microsoft RRAS that you can download as an upgrade to NT RAS, report by Help->About as:
Microsoft (R) Routing and RAS Admin version 4 Build 1381 Service Pack 6.
