I am running XP SP2 on a P4 3.60 GHz with 2 GB RAM, NTFS file system, connected to Novell 6.5 network. I have tried to run chkdsk from the Tools tab of C: drive properties. It says it will schedule the job. When I restart it tries to run chkdsk but gives msg "Cannot open volume for direct access".

I have tried it in safe mode and it does the same. I have tried to repair the installation and it still behaves the same. In our office we have a number of other PCs with identical software loaded, but I can run chkdsk on them.

This is VERY FRUSTRATING and I would be grateful for any help.

Are you running any software such as GoBack or Norton Protection Bin which might be tying up the drive? Do you have any Bios Virus Scanning procedure enabled? It is obvious something you are running is preventing exclusive access to this drive.

This turned out to be a Norton problem

You can always load the Recovery Console and try running Chkdsk /r from there.

How to install and use the Recovery Console in Windows XP

Hi Linney,

I am running Vet anivirus software, but I disabled it and still had the problem.

Until you locate that which is denying exclusive access for ChkDsk the problem will remain.

I was talking about virus scanning that is run from within the Bios by the Bios. Anyway, if you have the problem even from Safe Mode, I would have a good look at the Bios. Also what access does the Novell Network have to your drive at Startup?

It might be even something similar to this type of software?
