Strange machine. Son's XP was working fine until we had a problem with the cable modem. Got that fixed and now I get an error message when I "ipconfig /renew" abot not being a socket such and such. Pings and works fine when a static IP is setup. However DNS won't resolve Using the same DNS server entries on another machine. NSLOOKUP return an error that it can't get the name of the DNS server, but we can ping it fine.

Summary-
Network connectivity wirh static ip (192.168.3.15 255.255.255.0)
Can ping gateway and external DNS servers.

Can't recieve DHCP Leases or resolve thru DNS.

Checked the ICS and OS firewall settings, they are disabled.

Could you translate what "not being a socket such and such" means ?

I think you are trying to mix fixed IP and DHCP.
Put it on DHCP and reboot.
Or, if you want to use Fixed IP, make SURE the default gateway is also filled in to point to the router (cable modem or ISP). If the solution is out there, let us know it was helpful, so others can benefit from it as well..
