I have XP Pro installed on a Dell laptop. It had been working fine for a long time. Suddenly it stops at startup with error message " Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: System32\Drivers\PCI.sys". When I try to perform a repair by booting from CD I get another error message saying "File Setupdd.sys could nor be loaded. The error code is 4."
Any suggestion would be appreciated.

I would suspect a hardware problem - I've seen lots of 'corrupt files' or cannot read/access files messages which are down to this.

Have you changed anything recently? If not, could be something starting to fail.

If your mobo/bios allows, you could try slowing down either/both memory & cpu speed. Also check fans are working correctly (overheating can also cause this sort of response).

Thanks for the suggestions, but I have not changed any hardware recently. I only installed Unreal Tournament about 10 days ago, but it was working fine. Regardless, in case there is a hardware failure problem what would you suggest me to do ?!
Thanks again.

Try finding a System Restore point that you can roll back...

Try Safe Mode (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?) and load the "Last known good configuration" option.

Do you have access to the Recovery Console?

If they don't work you could try repairing windows itself by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.
