When I boot into windows XP, I get to the windows screen (where the blue bar moves from left to right) and no further.

If I press the restart button it comes up that my windows has failed. If I select the 'last known good' option then the windows will boot OK. However I have to go through this every time I boot.

How can I find out what is going on during the windows boot screen, so that I can find out what is causing the problem.

thanks

/noguiboot
This switch disables the bitmap that displays the progress bar for Windows startup. (The progress bar appears just before the logon prompt.)

/sos
The /sos switch displays the device driver names while they are being loaded. By default, the Windows Loader screen only echoes progress dots. Use this switch with the /basevideo switch to determine the driver that is triggering a failure.

/basevideo
The /basevideo switch forces the system into standard 640x480 16-color VGA mode by using a video driver that is compatible with any video adapter. This switch permits the system to load if you selected the wrong video resolution or refresh rate. Use this switch in conjunction with the /sos switch. If you install a new video driver, and it does not work correctly, you can use this parameter to start the operating system. You can then remove, update, or roll back the problem video driver.

You can either edit your Boot.ini file, or use MSCONFIG to set these options using radio buttons.

Some things to test:

[li] Disable (not uninstall) any unused network adapters through Device Manager;[/li]
[li] Install the User Profile Hive Cleanup Service: as it might help with the base issue presented here;[/li]
[li] If you have not enabled System Restore on your system, please do so as a safegaurd. It is possible you may in the future have to restore your registry and the System Restore reserves are the only reasonable place to draw upon.[/li]

Will it start in just Safe Mode, without the hanging at the blue screen you describe, if you press F8 at boot?

Will it start normally if you remove easily detached hardware such as USB peripherals and Network cables?

HOW TO: Verify Unsigned Device Drivers in Windows XP

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Select both boxes.

The obvious question is, what happened to the machine just before this problem began?

Bcastner has alluded to these, but you could try System Restore from Safe Mode or Normal Mode to get back to before the problem began.

An easy to follow recovery console description when unable to start computer due to corrupt registry.

This is a layman's version of Q307545 in simple language.
