Help! Not a super IT guy but I know enough to get me in trouble.

I have a laptop, Compaq Presario 2594. Problem:

For no reason I can find, my laptop will not boot up. It goes through all of the screens normally until it gets to the logo screen right after the "windows is loading" screen with the moving bar. Its the blue screen with 2 darker blue bars at the top/bottom and the logo on the left. It will not go any farther whether in safe mode (any, dos mode included) or regular, LKC did jack, debugging no help, nothing. Any ideas? Oh, and the other challenge, my laptop has no floppy so no dos boot disk. Any help is appreciated! Thanks.

Do we think that more info is in need. What OS is running?, Partitions on the HD?, etc.

Kind to help any time but give us more info on your system.

Regards

Anyhow, try to boot from your XP CD and first do a repair of XP installation, on the console try a FIXBOOT and FIXMBR.....Warning if there's a virus it could damage your data.

This is a entry point.

regards

Try ChkDsk /r from the Recovery Console.

HOW TO: Install and Use the Recovery Console for Windows XP (Q307654)

If no luck, you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates (no problem if you substitute them with SP2) but your files and programs will be untouched.

How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade (Reinstallation) of Windows XP (Q315341)

. Disconnect from any network
. Unplug any non-critical USB devices

Try again.

If no joy, I would still fight the good fight and follow these instructions for a registry restore using Recovery Console, which you can access through an XP CD:

If still no joy, follow linney's advice above to do a repair reinstall.

Best of luck,

Thanks guys. I'm running XP home, no partitions, its pretty much oughta the box. I'm going to do the repair first thing tomorrow, my house is being remodeled so my non-essential stuff is in boxes, including the Windows disk. I should be able to find it and go from there. Thanks again & I'll keep you posted.
