XP Boot CD

I have this XP Pro CD (with a valid university license). When trying to install it I found that it doesnt boot from the CD. I can only install it from the existing OS. One other problem I have with this is that I couldnt overwrite the existing partition or specify a new partition even when I selected that option during install. Someone told me that XP was never meant to bootable. No explanations given !!! I thought any OS should be bootable. Could someone kindly provide some facts and reasons. Also how to overwrite partition (create boot floppies?).

Note, I did check the option in BIOS and it was enabled.

did you set 'boot from cd' as the first boot device other than your floppy and hd?

since win98 all installation cd should be bootable....and when you mean overwrite an exsisting partition do you mean delete and recreate a new partition containing different size? this can be accomplish during the xp install or as you say boot disk...a win98 boot disk and by doing fdisk you can change your partition.
