XP and Internet Explorer

I recently had to repair XP Home due to a boot problem. All went reasonably well except that my internet browser no longer works. I have tried deleting, reinstalling, copying, all to no avail. IE trys to connect but I get a message saying that a command failed. This happens several times while some type of a temp file is bieng copied in the background.

The system is a P4 @ 2 gig. My E-mail works fine over the DSL connection.

Any suggestions?

IE 6 and XP are so closely interwoven that often problems with one mean problems with the other (a real pain...)
Deleting is not a good idea, as a reformat is the only way to clear IE off an XP machine.
