I recently got DSL and hooked up a LinkSys router up to the DSL modem. I have a 98 machine and an XP machine. Both machines can get ou to the WAN but cannot see each other on the LAN. I have even tried the XP wizard to setup both machines. I need to share a couple of directories and printers. What am I missing???

It is most likely a sharing/permission problem. On the Win98 side, it's fairly easy. Select a drive, right-click it and choose "Sharing" (if you don't see an option for sharing, you need to install/turn on File and Printer Sharing).

On the XP side, it's more complicated. You need to allow set a drive for sharing and set a permission for the Win98 computer. The simplest method is to set up a Guest user account.

Accessdabbler - XP, simplified shared is enabled by default, which works much like 98's sharing - you just need to share resource, no need to play with accounts.

I managed to figure out the problem. It was the XP firewall. When I disabled it the machine started to see each other.
