XP / 2000 Server files synchronization

When an XP Pro user logs off our 2000 server network domain, it tries to synchronize files causing all sorts of errors. Microsoft states that this can be switched off using a group policy. I've set the group policy to stop synchronizing, but to no avail. The XP workstation still tries to synchronize. What am I missing here? Is there something else I need to do?
