Hello,

On 4.3.3 systems I had updated from ML10 to ML11 "xntpd" doesn't start. The log says:

Dec 4 09:04:54 spn07 xntpd[36744]: 3.4y
Dec 4 09:04:54 spn07 xntpd[36744]: tickadj = 1000, tick = 10000, tvu_maxslew = 99000
Dec 4 09:04:54 spn07 xntpd[36744]: precision = 6 usec
Dec 4 09:04:54 spn07 xntpd[36744]: bind() fd 3, family 2, port 123, addr 00000000, in_classd=0 flags=1 fails: Address already in use

# lslpp -w /usr/sbin/xntpd
File Fileset Type
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
/usr/sbin/xntpd bos.net.tcp.client File
# lslpp -L bos.net.tcp.client
Fileset Level State Description
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
bos.net.tcp.client 4.3.3.86 C TCP/IP Client Support

Please tell me what is the reason of it?

the /etc/ntp.conf is the same as was before system update.

OK, the port is occupied by what for?

# grep 123 /etc/services
ntp 123/tcp # Network Time Protocol
ntp 123/udp # Network Time Protocol
instsrv 1234/tcp # Network Install Service

# netstat -a|grep ntp
udp4 0 0 loopback.ntp *.*
udp4 0 0 spn07_stby.ntp *.*
udp4 0 0 spn07_boot.ntp *.*
udp4 0 0 spn07_en0.ntp *.*
udp4 0 0 *.ntp *.*

OK, I've found.

On SP environment there is started "SP version" of xntpd located here:

/usr/lpp/ssp/bin/xntpd
