What do the people on this forum think of XML? I keep hearing all the big players in databases are supporting XML and it seems to be one of the big buzzwords right now. Is it likely to be a trend a lot of businesses will spend a lot of money on and then find it does not go anywhere, or is it really the wave of the future that it seems to be.

I know that in the course of my studies one of the things I have noted is that just because a technology is better does not mean it gets adopted and advanced. One only has to look to the past to see many examples of that from keyboards to processors. Which way is XML likely to go?

Everything I see right now going on in the industry is the XML is the future. Microsoft's .NET strategy is based on XML. All enterprise integration efforts are leaning towards XML. Intel, Sun, Cisco, Microsoft and IBM all have XML products. XML may fall to the waste side but if it does, its not because people were not putting major money behind it. Go to the book store and look at the XML section now. In the past year alone it has grown tremendously. Web development is going from HTML to XHTML and then will finally migrate to XML.
