I am in the enviable role of system engineer on a project that is attempting to export log data for a number of consumers to analyze. To me, the choice was obvious, we should convert the logs to XML, based on a well defined schema, before exporting them to users.
The developers of the applications doing the work are fighting this, and want to export data as CSV because they have already written parsing tools in Excel to manipulate the data.
I need to find some authoritative references citing the strengths and weaknesses of XML, CSV and databases.
I have read numerous articles that conjecture on the relative merits, but I was looking for something a little more ojective, such as thesis, dissertations or whitepapers from more reputable sources. Perhaps something that references compatibility, maintainability and operability, preferably in quantifiable terms.
Anyone come across anything like this in their travels?
Thanks,
pansophic
