XML Spreadsheet not in earlier version than Excel2002

Hi,

Our intranet application gives the possiblity to create serveral lists in excel. On the server the excel-file is generated. The Disadvantages of this are the extra licence cost,it's unstable and there are difficulties when you want to upgrade. We want to get rid of this. So we thought to create the lists in XML Spreadsheet.
Problem is that not all the clients have Excel 2002.
So is there any possibility to get the functionality of XML Spreadsheet in a earlier version of Excel, or does anyone have an Idea to get rid of the excel application on the server.
