My company does EDI via VAN,AS1,AS2,and FTP. They want to now bring XML into the EDI scope. I have tried to read/research what role XML would have in the EDI arena, but can't come up with any reason/explanation on how it would benifit us. Can anyone shed some light on this area?

XML is a data format, like X.12, AS1, and CSV.

To use it in an EDI scenario, both parties must agree to use it, and must agree on how it should look (how the document is formatted).

You might want to see if there are any groups in your industry who are setting standards for XML document interchange (like for the HR industry).

Sounds like buzzword chatter.

If you're already doing EDI, then you are exchanging documents in a mutually agreed upon, standard format. So what would be the benefit of reformatting the existing documents in XML? (Which is what you asked, isn't it...) None, really, unless there's a bigger picture that we don't see, such as a merger with another company that wreaks havoc on all your enterprise processes. (I.e., a huge forced integration task.)

Your best bet might be, instead of trying to identify the benefits yourself, asking the chatterers what benefits they're expecting and why. If they don't have a solid answer, it has all been BS.
