XML and AJAX

Hi:
I want to thank you for taking out the time and reading this. But I need to know If anyone has any code that can help me out on using a XML or txt file getting the data from there to populate my dropdown box.
Basically have 6200 college names. Loading it right now into the dropdown box takes up a lot of time. I did this through php function.
Is there an easier way or can I do a dynamic list based off from letters A,B,C.. if yes does anyone have code for that.

The normal example used to show this is Google Suggest, which functions in this way.

You may find code for this type of function in the Professional AJAX code download. You are looking for the first example in Chapter 7.
