Hello,

1. Can anyone describe in short the major differences between XML 1.0 and XML 2.0?

2. Is XML 2.0 supported by IE 5.5 and NS7?

3. Can anyone post a non-sales related site that covers XML 2.0 and creating scheme therin (w3shcools seems to be XML 1.0 based)?

Thanks,

Michael42

XML 2.0 will not be supported by older browsers unless a patch is released for them.

Take a look at:

Note that this is from February 2002. I did a search on the W3C site and didn't see anything about XML 2.0 -- you might want to look at their newsgroups.

Hi guys,

Chip, that document seems like nothing but speculation, including the "v2.0" identifier.

Michael, are you sure you mean "between 1.0 and 2.0" and not "between 1.0 and 1.1?" There is a v1.1 already.

No I am not sure? Thanks for asking. :)

1. Is 1.1 the newest version?
2. What does it bring to the table?
3. Any browsers support it?

Thanks again for replying!

Elliotte Rusty Harold's book, "Effective XML," was published earlier this year (2004.) In it, he states that v1.1 hadn't been released yet, and might never be released. Because v1.1 doesn't bring anything to the table that I find useful, I haven't tried to follow its state of release. According to Harold,
STAY WITH XML 1.0

Everything you need to know about XML 1.1 can be summed up in two rules.

1. Don't use it.
2. (For experts only) If you speak Mongolian, Yi, Cambodian, Amharic, Dhivehi, Burmese, or a very few other languages and you want to write your markup (not your text but your markup) in these languages, you can set the version attribute of the XML declaration to 1.1. Otherwise, refer to rule 1.

XML 1.1 does several things, one of them marginally useful to a few developers, the rest actively harmful.

(I think the above quote is "fair use," but I'm not willing to type anymore.) If you really need more particulars then I suggest you get hold of a copy of Harold's book. But I think this should suffice to discourage you. If not, may I ask "Why?

harebrain,

Thanks for the post. That was very useful.
