XLR1200 /w 2 CPU modules hanging up

Hi all,

We have an Accelar 1200 running code 2.1.5.0 with 2 CPU XLR1298SF blades. 2 vlans by ports created, XLR not in production, just testing it for now (3 laptops + 1 baystack 370 connected so far), so no traffic overload.

Here's my problem:
One CPU module was causing troubles (no console access possible, redundancy not operationnal).
So I had Nortel to exchange one CPU module since at beginning we thought it was the problem.

Now, both CPU modules seem to hang up (alternately) after a short while (3 times in 24 hours).
Even if I let the CPU module just received by itself (the other physically removed), it ended this morning hung up with all lights steady on.

Could it be a backplane issue?

Console in and reboot the switch. See if any error messages pop up.
Have you tried booting w/ only one CPU blade in?
If your consoled in do you get any kind of command prompt? If so try reloading the boot code. (more than likely p10b2150.img)

Somr things to try.

My suggestions are what I would try myself. If incorrect, I welcome corrections to my knowledge.

I found what my problem was!

After contacting Nortel support, the Tech was a bit lost
after I detailed everything I tried out to troubleshoot.
Finally he call me back, and we found out it's because of the laptop (Dell Latitude CPi-A) I use to console in the XLR, yeap, Dell rocks.
Here is an excerpt of the internal technical buletin (not available to public) he provided me with:

Description:
This TSB is regarding Dell laptop models Cpi, CpiA, CPxJ, and CPxH running Windows-2000 or Windows2000Pro.
Connecting a console cable from these laptops to a PP1000 SSF console port can cause the CPU to reset and
possibly cause the CPU module to hang in monitor mode.
Discussion:
This problem does not exist when these laptops are docked in their docking stations. The problem exists when an
undocked Dell/Win2000 laptop running Hyperterminal is connected directly to the console port.
The actions that trigger this event are:
1) Closing a Hyperterminal window
2) Performing a system Shutdown
3) Performing a system Restart
NOTE: The fix described herein only addresses the problem with DELL CPxJ and CPxH laptops. Dell Corporation
has decided that there will be no new software development for CPi and CPiA laptops, therefore, NO fix is provided
for the latter two models.
Resolution:
A) If you are using one of the laptop models mentioned above, you could work around the problem by remembering
to DISCONNECT the console cable before shutting down the Windows-2000/Hyperterminal session. Keep in
mind, this only a temporary fix.
B) For a permanent fix, upgrade the Dell laptops (CPxJ and CPxH) to its latest Bios version. At the time this testing
was done, the latest Bios version for the laptop models mentioned was A14.
C) Install Dell/Microsoft patches Q275042 W2K SP3 x86 en.exe. As of last contact w/ Microsoft Support, this
particular patch should be included in the next Windows-2000 ServicePak, which should be ServicePak3. Since,
this is actually a Microsoft W2K SP3 patch, Nortel cannot post this patch on our Nortel sites. Please contact
Microsoft Support to obtain this patch (you may be able to find this patch by searching for this "Article
Q275042&quot or wait for the release of Win2k ServicePak3.
