Hi,

My data is arranged by Groups, eg Frame, Engine, Furnishings, Electrical, etc. Each Group contains a number of Subgroups, so for example Engine contains; Oil, Fuel, Control, Exhaust. Electrical might contain Wiring, Generator, Control Panel, Lighting, etc. Each of these Subgroups can have a number of Faults raised against it.

A Pivot Table would List Groups, Subgroups, and Count Of Faults. If I do a Pie Chart of Groups, how can I select just a single Group's segment and pull out a Bar-of-Pie showing that Group's Subgroups, stacked by number of faults?

All my attempts so far insist on showing a Bar of Groups, sized according to the number of Subgroups in them, and also makes me pick at least 2 segments. How should I do it to show: Main Pie - All Groups. Split out one Group 'slice' and do a stacked Bar of its Subgroups?

Hi,

I do not have a definitive answer: rather a general observation from previous experience.

Pivot Charts provide fewer options than charts based on data aggregated in ways other than using a Pivot Table. So I've found ways to, in a sense, pivot the data myself, not manually mind you, in order to achieve a chart that a PT/PC would not allow. PTs are great for lots of some aggregations but not for ALL aggregations.

You might want to expand your horizons.

Hi Skip,
I had a feeling that's what you'd say. And in my experience, if Skip says it, then it must be so! [wink]

Ok, the long way it is then. Sigh!

I, Skip, would not hang my hat on that! Ohhh NO!

This is just my LIMITED experience, my own opinion and my personal prejudice. I've been wrong more than once in these forums, and I expect that as long as I post or open my mouth, I'll be wrong again.

I would grant that there may well be someone a whole lot smarter than me who could make a PT/PC work for what you want to do.

Can you furnish some representative data that someone might use to try to make a PT/PC or other, fitting your requirements?

Sure Skip, here are some random examples of the kind of data I'm using:
Code:
Group	Section	Faults
Structure	Wings	10
Structure	Fuselage	24
Structure	Airframe	24
Structure	Tail	15
Engine	Oil	17
Engine	Fuel	21
Engine	Starting	18
Engine	Hydraulics	2
Electrical	Generator	25
Electrical	Wiring	8
Electrical	Panels	6
Electrical	Controls	10
Electrical	Batteries	10
Avionics	Computing	4
Avionics	Mission	25
Avionics	Navigation	21
Avionics	Instruments	25

Chris,

I don't believe that the Bar of Pie works as I perceive you intend. That is when you select a pie slice, there is a drill-down from that selected Group to that group's Section that gets displayed in stacked bars. NADA. The Bar of Pie just displays parts of the same level, in this cas the Group level.

So what you need is an interactive chart. Do you have Power View installed as an Add-In. I don't. If you do, there apparently are drill-down features available.

Otherwise, you need to CODE a VBA solution, using the GetChartElement() function and drill-down queries to return the subset of Section/Faults for any given Group selected. Definitely a Forum707 thing.
