XHTML <td background="image.gif"> problem!!!

Ok... the background attribute for table cells is VERY precious to me as I've used it in almost 100% of the pages I've created. I was horrified to see that it ISN'T supported within XHTML 1.0

Is there any way around this? Or a way to 'cheat' possibly? I just want to get it to work. ----------------------------------------

I believe that needs to be set in CSS. I supposed you can check
